At Jessica Pilates, private sessions on the reformer aim to work the entire body by using the unique pulley system of the reformer springs for resistance. When using the reformer, you are able to isolate and focus on different parts of the body, thereby targeting specific muscle groups more effectively.

How does the reformer work?

The reformer is a large piece of Pilates equipment designed around a bed-like frame. Inside the frame sits a flat platform called a carriage, which rolls back and forth, within the frame, on a set of wheels. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs, within which each spring has a different strength. The springs can be adjusted to alter the resistance against which the carriage is pushed or pulled along the frame of the reformer.

Located at the spring end of the reformer is an adjustable footbar, which can be pushed against, with either the hands or feet, to move the carriage.

Attached to the opposite end of the reformer are long straps with handles. The hands or feet can be inserted into these handles as a further way of moving the carriage.

How do you exercise on the reformer?

The reformer is a highly versatile piece of equipment. Exercises can be done sitting, standing, lying down, pulling the straps, pushing the footbar, perched on the footbar, upside down, sideways and all kinds of variations thereof. Workouts on the reformer consequently remain diverse, interesting and challenging.

Do you need to be a certain body type or size to use the reformer?

Most parts of the reformer are adjustable so as to accommodate all different body types.

What level of experience do I need to use the reformer?

Since the resistance offered by the springs on the reformer can be modified, it proves an ideal piece of equipment for both beginners and those with greater Pilates experience. Jess Curnier is qualified to teach Pilates on the reformer to all ability levels.
